While I had known no doctors in my extended family, I grew up supporting a medical missionary in Ecuador. I planned to go to medical school, but put that aside for a career in the church, where I served as a music minister, then pastor in Austin, then a magazine editor in Washington, DC before deciding to return to medical school in my mid-30s with my wife and three children. My careers in music, ministry and journalism are invaluable foundations for a kind, creative, thorough, whole-person centered approach to practice. My clinic team has a sense of mission alongside me.
