Ascension Providence announces Waco’s first TAVR program

Cardiac patients can now receive minimally invasive valve replacement close to home

Ascension Providence recently announced that The Heart Hospital at Ascension Providence now offers Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR), an innovative, minimally invasive procedure with many benefits for heart patients seeking an aortic valve replacement.

Providence’s TAVR program, as part of its new Structural Heart Program, includes a structural heart room, EP and Cath lab enhancements, and ability to offer a wide range of procedures. Through a strategic partnership with Waco Cardiology Associates, Ascension Providence offers the only TAVR program and procedure in Waco.

“We are excited to now offer the latest advancement in aortic valve replacement for the Waco community and surrounding areas,” said Dr. Brian Barnett, cardiologist with Waco Cardiology Associates and Ascension Providence. “Often, patients with severe aortic valve stenosis go untreated. At Ascension Providence, we are honored to launch life-saving treatment for patients while allowing them the convenience of staying close to home.”

Life-Saving Benefits Of TAVR

The TAVR procedure enables the placement of a new aortic valve into the heart via a catheter that is inserted through an incision in the groin area and guided up to the heart through the circulatory system. With an average hospital stay of two to three days, this new treatment method can offer a much shorter recovery time—one to two weeks, versus six to eight weeks with the traditional sternotomy.

The benefits of the TAVR procedure include:

  • Shorter recovery time and hospital stay
  • Minimally invasive treatment
  • No need for cardiopulmonary bypass or stopping the heart
  • Lower incidence of disabling stroke compared to surgery*
  • Lower mortality rate compared to surgery*
  • Life-saving option for high-risk patients

*In intermediate, high, and inoperable risk patients
