In September of 2008, Providence implemented the Intensivist Program to provide optimal care for critically ill patients….just another illustration of our dedication to our mission of compassion and excellence.
An on-call intensivist remains in the ICU 24 hours a day, seven days a week, ready to respond to any changes in a patient’s condition. If an acute problem should arise, it can be addressed immediately. Instead of waiting for a doctor to respond from home, or even the Emergency Department, intensivists can immediately respond with central lines, intubation, etc.
With portable ultrasounds, intensivists can also quickly diagnose at the patient’s bedside, instead of sending the patient to CT. The ultrasound can also be used to for routine checks to address changes early, such as developing or moving blood clots, to prevent larger problems. Such intensive care can improve the outcome for the critically ill, and even result in shorter hospital stays.
