History of The Heart Hospital

For over 30 years, Providence has led the way in heart health care advancements and innovations. This commitment to leadership and emerging technologies enables our team of professionals to deliver a superior level of care unequalled in Central Texas.

On March 30, 2007, Physicians, Providence employees, city and county officials and a large number of friends of Providence gathered together to dedicate the new F.M. and Gloria Young Tower. A dedication which came just some 18 months after ground was broken.

The 5 Story Tower F.M. & Gloria Young Tower includes:

  • New 30 Bed General Cardiac Nursing Unit
  • Increase in Intensive Care Unit Beds from 16 to 20
  • Addition of a new 10 bed Acuity Adaptable Unit
  • New Congestive Heart Failure Clinic
  • New Cardio-Pulmonary Rehab Clinic
  • New Classrooms for Education
  • 2 Shelled Floors for Future Expansion

Providence Heart Achievements

1970

  • Waco's first coronary care unit opens at Providence, providing specialized care or critically ill heart patients.

1971

  • Dr. Charles A. Shoultz, Jr. joins the Providence medical staff as Waco's first cardiologist.

1973

  • Doctors R.W. Crosthwait, Jr. and R.T. Angel perform Waco's first open-heart surgery at Providence.

1981

  • The R.W. Crosthwait, Sr. Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Center opens to speed the recovery and improve the lives of Providence patients.

1982

  • Waco's first coronary angioplasty is performed at Providence

1993

  • Waco's first cardiac stent procedure is performed at Providence.

1996

  • Waco's first Electrophysiology Lab opens at Providence. Waco's first Automatic Implanted Cardiac Defibrillator is implanted at Providence.

1998

  • The cardiac team at Providence joins forces with over 1,000 health centers nationwide to offer free Early Heart Attack Care training to Waco and surrounding communities.

1999

  • Waco's first Chest Pain ER opens at Providence.

2001

  • Congestive Heart Failure Clinic opens at Providence.

2002

  • Waco's first Excimer laser System is installed—providing cardiologists with the newest technology in catheterization procedures.

2003

  • Providence named Top 100 Heart Hospital in America.
  • Waco's first Drug-Eluting Stent is implanted at Providence.
  • Waco's first Magnetic navigational Lab installed at Providence.

2004

  • Providence named Distinguished hospital for Patient Safety.
  • Providence named Top 100 Heart Hospital in America.

2005

  • Providence named Top Hospital in America.
  • Providence named Top 100 Heart Hospital in America.
  • Providence opened the first dedicated invasive peripheral vascular imaging suite and the first Medicare-approved site in Waco.

2006

  • Providence named Distinguished Hospital for Patient Safety.

2007

  • Providence named Distinguished Hospital for Patient Safety.
  • Opening of F.M. & Gloria Young Tower.

2008

  • Providence named Distinguished Hospital for Patient Safety.
  • Providence opens the M. Brian Aynesworth Research Center.
  • The first study is conducted at the M. Brian Aynesworth Research Center.

2009

  • Providence named Distinguished Hospital for Patient Safety.

2010

  • Providence named Distinguished Hospital for Patient Safety.
  • Providence updates and renovates 2 Cath Labs with state-of-the art equipment.
  • Providence celebrates 105 year anniversary.

2011

  • Society of Chest Pain Centers grant full accreditation with Percutaneous Coronary Intervention on November 1, 2011.
