Meet the Doctors


Donald Jeffrey Young, MD

Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, Dr. Jeffrey Young obtained his M.D. from Texas Tech School of Medicine, Lubbock, Texas in 1988. He completed his internship in General Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston Texas. Dr. Young completed his residency in General Surgery at St. Joseph Hospital, Houston, Texas. He went on to complete his residency in Vascular Surgery and Cardiovascular/Thoracic Surgery from the Texas Heart Institute, Houston, Texas. Dr. Young has been in private practice of surgery with Central Texas Cardiovascular since 1996. He is a member of many professional societies including the Texas Surgical Society, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the Denton A. Cooley Cardiovascular Society, the Southwestern Surgical Society and the McLennan County Medical Society.


Richard E. Helmer, IV, MD

Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. A lifelong Texan, Dr. Richard Helmer graduated from Baylor in 1995 and obtained his M.D. from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas in 2000. He completed General Surgery Residency at Texas Tech Health Science Center in Lubbock, Texas. He completed his residency in Thoracic Surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Helmer has a special interest in Thoracic Oncology (Lung Cancer), minimally invasive Thoracic Surgery, and Cardiac and Vascular Surgery. He is a member of the American College of Chest Physicians and the McLennan County Medical Association.


David Fickett, PA-C

Licensed by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners, and certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants, Mr. Fickett obtained his degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas in 1993. Performing minimally invasive vessle harvesting through endoscopic techniques, Mr. Fickett has been an integral part of the Cardiovascular Surgery program since 1993. He is a member of many professional societies including the American Academy of Physician Assistants and the Association of Physician Assistants in Cardiovascular Surgery.


Heather McCall, PA-C

Licensed by the State Board of Medical Examiners, and certified by NCCPA. Heather McCall graduated from Baylor University in 2008 with a degree in Nutrition Sciences. She recently received her Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies from the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth.

Pre-Admission Information:

Most patients will need to come in for pre-op lab work, X-rays, and teaching. These services are provided in our Outpatient Services Department located on the second floor of the main hospital. This is the same area of the hospital you will come to the day of your surgery.


The Nurse Navigator follows all of the Cardiovascular and Thoracic patients of Dr. Jeffrey Young, Dr. Michael McBride and Dr. Richard Helmer from admission to discharge. She assists the patient and family with education regarding their surgery and is here to make sure you have a positive experience during this complex time.
