What will my diet be like after adjustable gastric banding surgery?  For the first week you will be on a sugar-free, high-protein liquid diet.  You will then advance to a soft/mushy diet for the next four weeks. At about 5 weeks after surgery you will resume eating sugar-free, low-fat, high-protein solid foods. You will also meet with our Bariatric dietitian twice before surgery, and then periodically after surgery to help you with your new dietary lifestyle.

Will I have to take any vitamins after my surgery?  Yes, you will need to take a multivitamin, calcium supplement, B12 and Iron.  The Bariatric dietitian will assist you with selecting the appropriate vitamins and give you instructions on how to take them.  Additionally, we will check your labwork periodically to make sure you are not low on any vitamins or minerals and address any deficiencies as they occur.

Are there any other supplements I will have to take?  Yes, you will need to take a protein supplement as well for the first year after surgery.  Most quality supplements can be found in liquid or bar form.  Again, the dietitian will assist you in selecting a high-quality protein supplement that works best for you!

Do I need to exercise after surgery?  Yes, we ask that all patients begin walking prior to surgery to help with strengthening the body before surgery.  After surgery, you will begin walking the same day to prevent blood clots and lung complications.  Once home, we ask that you continue to walk to prevent complications and speed the recovery process, advancing your walking distance and speed slowly each day.  When you begin to lose weight, you will have so much more energy and may desire a more rigorous exercise routine.  Many of our post op patients now enjoy running, bicycling, Zumba, weight lifting, and swimming.

What should I expect after my surgery?  You will be sore for the first couple weeks following surgery.  As your body begins to heal and the weight begins to come off, you will notice an increase in energy and improvement in the way you feel.  Many of our patients begin to come off of medications for high blood pressure and heart disease, diabetes, high cholesterol and depression rapidly.  We ask that patients return to their primary care physicians for follow up and tapering of these medications.  We will begin to “fill” you band at 5-6 weeks after your surgery.  You can expect with the Lap Band® System to lose about 40% or more of your excess weight by the end of one year by following our program.  That means if you have 100 pounds to lose, you can expect to lose 40 or more pounds!
