Martin Luther King Celebration

Providence Healthcare Network will host its 21st annual Martin Luther King celebration on Monday, Jan. 16, 2006 at 2 p.m. in the Providence Pavilion Auditorium. This year’s theme, “A Day On, Not a Day OFF,” celebrates Dr. King’s birthday with volunteers across the entire country engaged in several service projects including working with seniors, feeding the homeless, restoring parks and running educational activities for children.

“The intention nationwide is to make sure it is a day of activity and not just a day off from work,” said Ron Kuykendall, Providence’s director of environmental services and MLK celebration committee chairman. “It is my understanding that community was very important to Dr. King, and it is hard to have community without activity.”

The Providence celebration will include a keynote address by Rev. Delvin Atchison, pastor of Waco’s Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, music by a choir made up of Providence employees and presentation of the colors by Boy Scout Troup No. 462. KWTX Co-News Anchor Sharon Mayo-Parker will also have a part on the program.

“This celebration is a long-standing tradition at Providence,” Kuykendall said. “We have received great support from the Providence family and the local community in the past and hope it will continue this year.”

The celebration is free and open to the public. Call the Providence Marketing Department at 751-4000.
