It's true. Newborns do not
come with an owner's manual, but thanks to a new workshop especially for
expectant fathers, becoming a dad doesn't have to be scary. In conjunction with
its regular Childbirth Classes, Providence is beginning an exciting new session
called Boot Camp for New Dads - a unique, 3 hour workshop designed specifically
for men, in which experienced fathers (who actually bring their own babies) show
expectant dads the ropes of fatherhood.
This hands-on program practically addresses the fears,
frustrations, and concerns that every man goes through as he becomes a father.
Sr. Cecile Matushek, Vice President of Mission Affairs at Providence first
learned of the program from her association with CareNet Pregnancy Center here
in Waco. "This is a national program that has been featured in Parenting
Magazine, Readers Digest, Good Morning America, and The Today Show, " said Sr.
Cecile. "It's an exciting, yet practical way to put new fathers at ease as they
anticipate the arrival of their new babies."
The Program has been well-received by Providence
employees. Women's Services Director Audra Hernandez and family life coordinator
Peggy Luna got behind the project early, anxious to include the session as part
of the Childbirth Classes offered at Providence for expectant parents. In
addition, John Drosche, husband of Administration Secretary Donna Drosche, has
agreed to teach the class (with special assistance from 9 month old daughter
Malley), and several other Providence dads including Admitting Director Russ
Weaver; Foundation Officer Chuck Sivess; Vice President, Business and Support
Services, Jay Scherler; Jay Davis, husband of Brenda Davis, Vice President of
Clinical Services; and John Layne, husband of EmmyLou Layne, Business Services.
As classes are held and babies are born, new dads will
be recruited to bring babies back to share their knowledge with other expectant
fathers. "It's a wonderful way to help new dads to become effective fathers and
enjoy their children more," said Sr. Cecile.
