Meet our
Hospitalists
At Providence, a special group of physicians called
hospitalists, have partnered with the Health Center in
pursuing the mission of providing excellent and
compassionate patient care. This website explains what
hospitalists do and how they can improve a patient’s
medical care during their stay at the Health Center.

Steven Elwell, MD Medical Director
Dr. Elwell graduated
from the University of Texas with a Bachelor of Science Degree in
Chemistry. He continued with a Medical Degree from the University of
Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. He chose to stay in
Dallas for his internship and internal medicine residency at
Parkland Hospital. His years of experience as an Internal Medicine
Physician and Emergency Room Physician include serving as both
President and Chief of Staff for a private physician practice here
in Central Texas. Today, Dr. Elwell serves as the Medical Director
for our Hospitalist Program at Providence Health Center.

Larry Davis, MD Quality Director
Dr. Davis graduated
from Texas A & M with a Bachelor of Science Degree. He completed his
Medical Degree with the University of Texas Southwestern Medical
School in Dallas, and finished his internal medicine residency at
Scott & White. With twenty five years experience in Internal
Medicine, Dr. Davis joins the Hospitalist team at Providence Health
Center truly understanding the importance of the relationship
between patient and physician. In his own clinic practice, Dr. Davis
balanced nearly thirty patient visits per day while caring for
hospitalized patients at the same time. It is experience like this
that makes Dr. Davis a perfect fit as our Quality Director of
Hospitalists here at Providence.

Gordon Clark, MD, Ph.D.
Dr. Gordon Clark has
undergraduate experience from the University of North Carolina and
East Carolina University, where he received his Bachelor of Arts in
Biology. He received both his Ph.D. and his Doctor of Medicine
Degree from Tulane University in New Orleans. Dr. Clark completed three
residencies—a surgery residency from both Duke and Tulane; a
pathology residency from Ochsner Foundation Hospital in New Orleans;
and, an internal medicine residency from Texas Tech University
Health Sciences Center—where he served as the Chief Resident in
internal medicine. With nineteen years of teaching experience and
twenty-eight years of practicing medicine, Dr. Clark now joins our
Hospitalist Team at Providence Health Center.

Robert DeMuth, MD
Dr. DeMuth graduated
with a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of North
Texas in Denton. He continued with his Medical Degree from the Texas
Tech University Health Science Center School of Medicine in Lubbock.
From West Texas, Dr. DeMuth traveled all the way to Honolulu, Hawaii
where he completed his residency and internship in internal medicine
at the Tripler Army Medical Center. A United States Army Flight
Surgeon, Dr. DeMuth has years of experience serving our country.
Now, Dr. DeMuth is on our Hospitalist Team at Providence Health
Center

Robert Brown, MD
Dr. Robert Wayne Brown
has undergraduate degrees from both Abilene Christian University and
Southwest Texas State University. He completed his Medical Degree at
The University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, and
chose the family practice residency at The Washington Hospital in
Pennsylvania. With nearly three years experience as family practice
physician, emergency physician, and Hospitalist, Dr. Brown joins our
own Hospitalist Team here at Providence Health Center.

Chelliah Pandian, MD
Dr.
Pandian graduated from the University of Madras with a Bachelor of
Medicine and Surgery. After his undergraduate studies, he continued
his education at Jipmer Medical College where he received his MBBS.
Then he received his M.D. in General Medicine from Stanley Medical
College. After that he completed his Residency in Internal Medicine
at Mount Sinai School of Medicine at Queens Hospital Center. He was
a Medical Officer at Medicine and Government General Hospital in
Pondicherry, India. After this he was a Registrar at Medical and
Cardiology at Apollo Hospital. From there he was a Resident in
Internal Medicine at Corbett Hospital in Stourbridge United Kingdom.
From there he was a resident in Internal Medicine in Russells Hall
Hospital in Dudly Hall United Kingdom. From there he became an
Internist at Pondicherry India. Dr. Chandian has brought over five
years of experience after his time as an Internist in Pondicherry,
India to the Hospitality Team at Providence Hospital.

Barry Shefa, MD
Dr. Shefa spent his
undergraduate years in Fayetteville, graduating from the University
of Arkansas with a Bachelor of Science. He chose the University of
Texas Medical Branch in Galveston for his Medical Degree, and
completed his residency at the John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort
Worth. For a couple of years, Barry practiced medicine while
teaching new interns in the Intensive Care Unit at John Peter Smith
Hospital. From Tyler, Dr. Shefa now joins the team here at
Providence Health Center.

Roxann Samples, MD
Dr. Samples is a Texas
Aggie with a major in Biomedical Science. She chose the University
of Texas Health Science Center (UTHSC) in Houston for her Medical
Degree and completed her postgraduate training in San Antonio in the
Department of Internal Medicine at UTHSC. Prior to joining
Providence Health Center, Dr. Samples practiced medicine in Dallas
and in San Antonio.

Soni Jose, MD
Soni
Jose graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from
Binghamton University in New York. She continued her studies at New
York Medical College where she received her M.D. Soni completed her
Residency at Greenwich Hospital in Greenwich, CT in Internal
Medicine. Today Dr. Jose is part of the Hospitalist Staff here at
Providence.

Kelly Reynolds, MD
Dr.
Reynolds is another one of our Texas Aggies . . .with a double major
in Psychology and Biology. While at A&M, Dr. Reynolds spent three summers
right here in Waco working closely with teachers in an educational
program designed for children suffering from psychological and
behavioral problems. Following undergraduate school, Dr. Reynolds chose
the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio for her
Medical Degree. She completed her residency in Fort Worth at John
Peter Smith Hospital. She is a permanent faculty member of the
Family Medicine Center, and assists the Hospitalist team here at
Providence Health Center.

Sally Weaver, MD
Dr.
Weaver’s studies have taken her from Alabama to England and back to
the
U.S.! A graduate of Samford University with a Major in Biology, Dr.
Weaver
chose the University of Exeter in England for a Master of Philosophy
degree.
Upon moving back to the United States, Dr. Weaver earned her Ph.D.
from the
University of Louisville in Kentucky . . .and, it was there, at the
University
of Louisville, that she completed her Medical Degree as well. She
completed her
residency at the Waco Family Medicine Residency Program and has
taught at Baylor
University. Dr. Weaver is a permanent faculty member at the Family
Health
Center, and assists the Hospitalist team here at Providence Health
Center.

Meredeth McCoy, PA
Meredith McCoy graduated from Texas Woman’s University with a
Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology. She continued her studies at
Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and graduated with a
Masters of Physician Assistant Studies in August 2009. Her studies
gave her 12 months of experience in 8 rotations: internal medicine,
surgery, geriatrics, psychiatry, pediatrics, family medicine,
obstetrics and gynecology, and emergency room. Today Meredith
applies all of her experience and education as a member of the
Hospitalist Team at Providence Health Center.

Debbie Allen, FNP
Debra Allen graduated
from Texas A & M with a Master of Science in Nursing, specializing
as a Family Nurse Practitioner. Debra’s diverse experience includes
the United States Air Force and the Texas Air National Guard . .
.plus, eight years of family nurse practice right here at Providence
Health Center where her years of experience in post-anesthesia care
and emergency care fit perfectly into our Hospitalist Program!

Meryl Burchardt, ACNP
Meryl Burchardt
graduated from Baylor University with a Bachelor of Science in
Nursing. She continued her studies at Texas A & M and graduated with
a Masters in Nursing. For her post-graduate work, Meryl chose the
University of Texas School of Nursing where she received her degree
as Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. Meryl’s years of working
first-hand with both general surgeons and trauma surgeons has
resulted in the perfect combination of consulting with patients,
writing admission orders, lab work, prescribing medicine and
diagnosing conditions. Today, Meryl applies all of her experience
and education as a member of the Hospitalist Team at Providence
Health Center.

Rhonda Mullenax, ACNP
Ronda
Mullenax graduated from the University of Texas at Austin School of
Nursing with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She continued her
studies at the University Of Texas Health Science Center School Of
Nursing at Houston and received a Master of Science in Nursing,
Acute Care Nurse. Before coming to Providence, Ronda had four years
of experience as an R.N. in Critical Care. She is now part of the
Providence Hospitalist team.
