Childbirth Class Information

At Providence Health Center we consider every birth a miracle, and are delighted you have picked us to help you prepare for this wonderful event. To facilitate your birth experience, we have designed several classes ranging from prepared childbirth to sibling classes. Many couples expressed the need for a class that would work with their busy schedules so; we created a Special Weekend class, and a One Day class with them in mind. Listening to your needs insures that we can give you a great start on your parenting adventure!

                                                                                                      Class Schedule

Prepared Childbirth Series

This is a five-week series designed to meet the needs of couples having their first baby. The series provides information on health and safety during the last trimester of pregnancy, stages of labor and what to expect with each one, support and comfort techniques, and involvement of the labor partner, and breathing styles. Couples will be introduced to information about medications, anesthesia options, Cesarean childbirth, and what to expect after delivery, including newborn procedures and care. A tour of our beautiful labor and delivery department will be given along with introduction to monitors and equipment used during the labor and delivery process. Relaxation techniques will be done with couples sitting on the floor so you may want to bring a pillow and blanket.

Weekend Childbirth/Refresher Class
Life can be challenging enough without having to juggle already busy schedules, so we designed this class just for you! Taught are all the same topics in the Childbirth series, but in a convenient weekend. We suggest first time parents attend both the Saturday and Sunday classes. Parents who already have a child may attend the Saturday class as a review and refresher. We know that your life is busy and at your request, we developed this weekend class to help make it a little easier.

One-Day Childbirth Class
For those that have already made the decision that they will have epidural/pain medication, and do not have the desire to learn breathing styles, we have designed a class that will fit into your busy schedule. This class provides information on health and safety during the last trimester of pregnancy, stages of labor and what to expect with each one, support and comfort techniques, and involvement of the labor partner. Couples will be introduced to information about medications, anesthesia options, Cesarean childbirth, and what to expect after delivery, including newborn procedures and care. A tour of our beautiful labor and delivery is also included.

Newborn Care
This helpful class for new parents will focus on the care of a newborn infant. A range of topics are discussed such as new family changes, when to call the doctor, crying and colic. Time is also spent practicing basic care such as swaddling, diapering, and bathing your infant.

Infant CPR
We know that as a new parent you want to be ready for anything. With that in mind, an infant CPR class is now available to arm you with the ability to perform CPR and the knowledge of what to do in the event of choking.

Sibling Class
This course is designed to prepare older brothers and sisters for the new arrival. Transition into becoming a big sister or brother is sometimes scary for children. There are often concerns about the changes that will take place and what their role will be when the new baby comes. “Lizzie and the New Baby”, a film showed during the class shows a family as they prepare Lizzie for the arrival of a new brother. A craft project is sometimes done involving glue, so keep that in mind when dressing your little one. A tour of the Labor and Delivery unit will also be given.

Breastfeeding Basics
This is a one-session class focusing on techniques used to initiate successful breastfeeding during the early weeks with your new baby. Husbands or other support persons are welcome to attend with you. This class is free to those registered for Childbirth classes. It is important to register for the class in order to assure adequate space is provided.

Tour of the Women’s and Children’s Services are available. To schedule a tour of the unit, please call (254) 751-4581. Please be sure to schedule a time to tour, as sometimes the unit is full and no rooms would be available to view.

A Video Library was created for couples who are unable to attend any class but wish to check out a video to view. Please call Labor and Delivery at (254) 751-4581 to request a video.
