Providence is a member
of (and sponsored by) Ascension Health, a national system
cosponsored by the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de
Paul, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Nazareth, Michigan and
the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondolet. The Daughters of
Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, who originally founded
Providence, have a long and praiseworthy history of
service to society. St. Vincent and St. Louise de Marillac
founded the order of religious women in Paris France in
the year 1633. The American community of Daughters was
founded in 1809 by St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, and was united
with St. Vincent's community in 1850.
Providence Health Center
is Waco's first and newest hospital--founded in 1905 at
the request of local businessmen who saw the need for a
hospital in Waco. The businessmen approached the Daughters
of Charity about sponsorship of a hospital, to
which the Daughters agreed--and a hospital was born,
opening its doors officially in January 1905. While
searching for funding for the new Waco hospital, a
Daughter of Charity remarked, "We'll let Providence
provide;" thus giving the hospital its name.
Providence did indeed provide--and continues to do so
today. Providence relocated to its current site in 1989.
